Durable ADA Compliant Grating for Safe and Accessible Public Spaces

ADA compliant grating is designed to improve the safety and reliability of barrier-free access in public and commercial environments. Its primary goal is to ensure that all individuals – including those with disabilities – can move safely through various spaces without the risk of wheels, walkers, canes, or guide dogs becoming trapped or tripped due to excessively large openings in the grating.

  • According to ADA regulations, the maximum clear opening of the grating in any one direction must not exceed 1/2 inch (approximately 13 mm).
  • If the grating has elongated openings, its long side must be oriented perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
  • The surface must provide slip resistance.

Structural Types

To meet diverse environmental and load-bearing requirements, ADA compliant grating is typically manufactured in one of the following three structural forms:

  • Welded grating: Constructed by securely connecting bearing bars and crossbars together using high-temperature resistance welding, this type forms a robust, integrated structure. It offers a flat and stable surface, ideal for high-traffic areas.
  • Swage-locked grating: Formed by inserting punched bearing bars into hollow cross bars and locking them in place through high-pressure deformation. This results in a compact structure with a clean appearance. With the crossbars positioned below the bearing bars, a flat surface is created, balancing load-bearing capacity with visual appeal.
  • Dovetail grating: Manufactured by assembling pre-punched flat steel bearing bars and crossbars under high pressure into an "egg-crate" structure. This type of grating features tight interlocking, structural stability, and excellent ventilation, light transmission, and heat dissipation properties, with a visually uniform and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Features

  • Enhanced accessibility and safety. Narrow spacing prevents wheelchairs, canes, guide dogs, and similar aids from getting caught, improving the passage experience for all users.
  • Moderate openings, clog-resistant. It remains unobstructed in outdoor areas prone to accumulating leaves, dirt, and debris, reducing the need for frequent cleaning.
  • Excellent drainage and ventilation. Ideal for areas requiring rapid water drainage or air circulation, such as open-air platforms and equipment ventilation outlets.
  • Low maintenance. Compared to gratings with extremely small openings, these moderate openings allow debris to pass through more easily, minimizing accumulation and lowering maintenance costs.
  • Heavy-duty load support (optional). With reinforced structural design, the grating can support heavy wheel loads – suitable for industrial platforms, loading docks, and military aircraft pathways – while maintaining ADA compliance.

Applications

  • City sidewalks, ramps, and pedestrian bridges.
  • Public transit hubs, such as subway stations and airport walkways.
  • Tree grates, drainage covers, trench grates.
  • Commercial plazas, landscape platforms, park walkways.
  • Factory platforms, mezzanine floors, material washing racks.
  • Loading docks and vehicle-access areas (using heavy-duty gratings).
